Background:

Margaret Clayton is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing, and a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Dr Clayton's primary research interest is cancer survivorship, including how patient/provider communication processes influence emotional and physical well-being. Outcomes include self-report and physiologic measures, as well as coding of verbal and nonverbal communication interactions. She completed her Doctorate and Post Doctoral education under the direction of Dr. Merle Mishel RN, PhD, FAAN, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Clayton obtained her MSN / FNP at Pace University in NY, and her BSN at the University of Connecticut. Her extensive clinical background has focused on ambulatory care, including pediatrics, homecare, and cardiology.

Research Program/ Scholarly Activity:

During her doctorate and post-doctoral fellowship Dr. Clayton worked with a multidisciplinary team conducting intervention research to assist breast and prostate cancer survivors to manage uncertainty and improve quality of life. Her dissertation research investigated the impact of the communication process as well as uncertainty and physical symptoms on the emotional wellbeing of long-term Caucasian and African-American breast cancer survivors. Dr. Clayton's post-doctoral work expanded her focus on patient-provider communication, coding audiotapes of 60 office visits between breast cancer survivors and their providers [MD, NP, PA] for the degree patient-centeredness, as well as the impact of the communication process on the uncertainty and mood state of these women.
